Addressing Anger

As I delve more deeply into the niche of Anger Management a series of thoughts arise.  First, it would seem necessary to have a personal construct of the condition to be treated. Then it would seem necessary to adopt modalities and theoretical approaches believed to be most efficacious.

It does not seem prudent to attempt to eradicate anger.  Even if this could be done, there are reasons which make this goal imprudent.  Not all anger is destructive.  In many cases anger has positive effects for instance energy to achieve goals and the conceptualizing of brilliant thought.  It would seem therefore that the goal should be to target anger that is destructive or negative.  The goal of psycho intervention remains to assist others in living positive lives.

George Anderson has made a significant contribution to treating negative anger.  By combining effective communication, motivational interviewing, stress management, and Emotional Intelligence, he proposes a model that is both grounded in Behavioral modification and Cognitive reshaping.

However, I suggest a further step.  The most destructive anger occurs when a person loses control of normal behavior or thought.  We call that Rage.  Rage is a spiritual issue as it transcends rational and conscious behavior.  There is a need to address the spirit when addressing destructive anger.  Perhaps this means addressing core schema in regards to matters of Spirtuality?

I would love to hear your thoughts.
